Last week I attended a magazine layout class at Central Saint Martins, a well know art and design school in London. I have long been interested in the magazine world and I really wanted to do something creative over summer vacation. My MBA program has a lot of strengths but creativity is not one of them. Coming from a creative work background this has been a difficult adjustment and I really miss that environment. It was so nice to have that experience again even if it was only for one week.
The first thing we learned in the class was how to create a layout using InDesign. Our assignment was to create a layout with space for 1200 words and 3-5 photos. We were given a title, intro text and a pull quote to work into the layout. This is what my final version looked like:
Once we learned the basics we were split into teams of two and given the assignment of creating an art magazine by the end of the week. We were to create a cover, table of contents and two stories. My partner-in-crime was an Italian man from the fashion/photography world and we had a ton of fun together! We decided to create a magazine about illustration. We each drafted one story and I did the table of contents while he did the cover. My layouts are below. The may not be the best ever but I feel really good about these being my first ones. I had so much fun and I’m really happy with how they came out!
For my table of contents, I made-up a bunch of stories but included photos from both of our stories: Garance Doré and Botanical Illustrations:
The story was about Garance Doré and was a mock-up of an interview with her about her illustrations:
As soon as I got home I signed up for Adobe Creative Cloud. I can’t wait to keep playing! I love it!!
